Article: "Fell in love with the beauty of a Korean idol"... Japanese housewife loses life's savings to 'basement-dol'

A 19 year old Japanese man tricked a 44 year old Japanese housewife into believing that he is a Korean idol and extorting 24 million won in his scam. The woman claims she became interested in male Korean idols during the lockdowns and eventually met the fake idol member in Tokyo's Koreatown. "I received a flyer for his performance. He looked like a Korean idol and my heart fluttered when he asked that I come to watch him perform." The fake idol is a 'basement-dol', a type of performer who holds concerts in small basements where tickets are auctioned to women hoping to land a front-row seat for an intimate experience.

When she realized he is actually Japanese, "I felt like such a fool. I spent all the money I had, but I'll take this as a life lesson."

1. [+131, -4] Never in my life have I heard of a basement-dol ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

2. [+66, -10] Don't laugh too hard, guys. Koreans are not too far off from having something like this as well ㅋㅋㅋ Japan's always a step ahead of us with stuff like this

3. [+29, -1] Basement-dols = escorts

4. [+20, -2] What's next? Rooftop-dols? ㅋㅋㅋ

5. [+6, -0] That's quite a humble sum that she lost. There are idiots over here who are blowing 100 million won a pop on Afreeca streamers.

6. [+5, -0] I think the culture of basement-dols is actually very old. I lived in Japan 15 years ago and my roommate fell in love with one of those idols and always asked me to go see his performances with her. It's held in small concert halls (maybe fits 70 people?) and they only serve a cup of cider. I noticed that none of them were able to sing or dance and often wore bizarre outfits (black clothes, spiked hair, super white make up, thick eyeliner), and the woman who paid the most for her ticket would get to stand at the front in a type of praying pose (?) and the male vocal would go up to her and put his hand on her head while singing like he's serenading her. I remember feeling scared and quickly leaving after that.

7. [+3, -0] I bet you Koreans are going to create our own culture of basement-dols too. There are way too many people trying to become idols lately and the market's not big enough to fit all of them.

8. [+3, -0] So they're basically escorts pretending to be idols

9. [+2, -0] The host men are evolving

10. [+2, -0] I wouldn't be too far off in saying that Korea and Japan's idol industries are not in the production of artists but in the production of redlight performers
